Living Stone: Author Conversation with Dr. David and Shelly Wilkins

ADD TO CALENDAR

Dr. David and Shelly Wilkins are experts in the field of tribal governance, Shelly Hulse Wilkins having worked on issues of importance to Native governments for twenty-five years, and Dr. David Wilkins (Lumbee Nation) currently teaching as the E. Claiborne Robins Distinguished Professor in Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond Jepson School of Leadership Studies. Having lived and taught in Olympia before, they wanted to bring their new edited release of Of Living Stone to the very Orca Books, and introduce the book not merely as an author talk, but a community conversation and seminar.

The work of Vine Deloria Jr. - the works of which we carry often (God is Red, Indians of the PNW), are the works of one of the most celebrated scholars of our time. Not only influential in his scholarship, Vine Deloria Jr. is celebrated and honored today and was a major advocate for treaty fishing rights for local Native Americans in our very own Washington state. He worked on the legal case that led to the historic Boldt Decision of the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington -  which after Native Americans had the right to half the catch in fishing in the state, to take the fish from territory away from their reservations, and to manage the fisheries together with the state.

David and Shelly know Olympia, and they know Vine Deloria Jr.'s work! Don't miss out on a chance to be in dialogue with one of the most involved experts in the field.

Please read the author's full bio and more information on the book here!
