Join us on June 4, at 5:00pm for readings and a dialogue with Pacific Northwest authors Miranda Mellis and Allison Cobb.
Miranda Mellis is the author of Demystifications, The Revisionist, The Spokes, None of This Is Real, The Quarry, and Materialisms. She coauthored The Instead with Emily Abendroth and coedited The Encyclopedia Project. She lives in the Pacific Northwest and teaches at The Evergreen State College.
DEMYSTIFICATIONS is both a collection of aphorisms and a book-length poem, ninety-nine texts and one text. It combines the essay, narrative, documentation, anecdote, and fragment forms into a work that examines and interrogates present-day life. At once humorous, serious, and ecologically aware, these explorations have transformative results.
Allison Cobb (pronouns she/her) is the author of Plastic: an Autobiography from Nightboat Books. Her other books include After We All Died (Ahsahta Press); Born2 (Chax Press); and Green-Wood, originally published by Factory School with a new edition in 2018 from Nightboat Books.
Cobb’s work has appeared in Best American Poetry, Denver Quarterly, Colorado Review, and many other journals. She was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award and National Poetry Series; has been a resident artist at Djerassi and Playa; and received fellowships from the Oregon Arts Commission, the Regional Arts and Culture Council, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. Allison lives in Portland, Oregon.
In PLASTIC: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY, Allison Cobb’s obsession with a large plastic car part leads her to explore the violence of our consume-and-dispose culture, including her own life as a child of Los Alamos, where the first atomic bombs were made. The journey exposes the interconnections among plastic waste, climate change, nuclear technologies, and racism. Using a series of interwoven narratives―from ancient Phoenicia to Alabama―the book bears witness to our deepest entanglements and asks how humans continue on this planet.
