We are the staff of Orca Books, the largest independent bookstore in Olympia, Washington. You may have heard that Orca Books is transitioning into a Co-op, but what you may not have heard is that Orca Books is at risk of closing.
Orca Books is iconic. It’s been a staple here in Olympia for almost 30 years. Over this time, Orca Books has cultivated an atmosphere that is friendly and open. Our customers and staff come from all walks of life, forming a vibrant, supportive, and generousbook-loving community. Above all, Orca Books has rejoiced in providing a wonderful and eccentric haven for its equally wonderful and eccentric community.
We want to lay it out in black and white. Over the last two decades, Amazon, the big box stores, and e-books dealt a serious blow to indie bookstores nationwide. The corporate competition sent Orca on a downward spiral. But the tide is turning—independent bookstores are back on the rise. In order to catch this new wave of bibliophilia, we need a little extra help from our community.
The reality is that Orca Books is in danger of closing its doors…
