And welcome to our new web site!
We are the largest independent book store between Seattle and Portland, located in the heart of Olympia's vibrant downtown shopping district. We stock new and used books, cards, calendars, gift cards, and journals, and are proud to carry many locally-produced items by Olympia artists and craftspeople. We also offer a selection of tea and Olympia's own Batdorf and Bronson coffee. Also be sure and check out our Events Calendar in the side column to see what's happening at our store. Click here if you were looking for Canadian publisher Orca Book Publishers (orcabook.com). *This site is best viewed with anything other than Internet Explorer. Firefox, Flock, Opera, Sea Monkey and Netscape are all excellent (and free) browsers for Windows. We recommend either Safari or Camino for Mac OSX. If you have an older Mac, we recommend iCab. |

David James Duncan's PNBA Talk |

Here's an excerpt from the talk David James Duncan, author of The Brothers K, gave at the PNBA awards banquet in Portland this Spring. You can read the full text here.
"George Bush has no use for literature. The only image I’ve seen of him reading a book is
the photo op children’s book he abandoned when 9/11 happened. Bush prefers his religiosity as a source of inspiration for his policy and actions. He says his presidency, his diplomacy of beligerence, his war-making, his blatant earth-destruction, are based on his relationship with his “heavenly Father.” It’s relevant to mention here that the Bible is literature, and that if the president read it he’d encounter a character named Jesus who says, “Blessed are the peacemakers” and “Consider the lilies of the field.” People accuse fundamentalists of being literalists. If only it were so!

If you've been in the store in the past few months you've probably noticed a little orange addition to our staff. Henry is our new store cat. He came to us from Feline Friends, a cat shelter on Steamboat Island. When they found him he was living in an old burned out barn and was frequently seen bringing food to a couple of kittens. He was a little freaked out his first few weeks here, but he's quickly made the place his own, and we essentially dwell here at his pleasure now. Feel free to go up and say hi the next time you're in.
If you're thinking of adopting a new cat anytime soon, please give Feline Friends a visit. Their website has profiles of many of the cats in their shelter. You can also click here to make a donation. |
