Thursday, January 9th, 7:00pm -- Vicki Robin: Blessing the Hands That Feed Us
Orca Books is thrilled to welcome Vicki Robin to the store this January evening.
Vicki begins BLESSING THE HANDS THAT FEED US with stories of her prior life as a neurotic and sporadically virtuous eater and why she took up the 10-mile challenge. We follow her week by week as she grapples with limits and learns lessons and discovers how eating closer to home brought her whole life closer to home as well. It’s not a new right way; it’s a new relationship with what is all around us – all the time. Next she asks a bigger question: “What if everyone did it?” Can “local food” make a dent in big food issues of hunger, justice, nutrition, obesity and illness? Her conclusion is yes! Relational eating – connected to place – and complementary food systems – revitalizing regional agriculture – can work almost anywhere and profoundly contribute to a healthy food future.
Filled with recipes of meals eaten both alone or in company of neighbors, including many of those who are feeding her, Vicki’s story also highlights the lives of a fascinating group of individuals who epitomize the sustainable lifestyle. Among them are Tricia, the prolific market gardener who issued Vicki’s 10-mile challenge; Britt and Eric, two young, enthusiastic farmers living their dream of self-sufficiency; and Vicky, a former corporate executive turned cheese maker.
Robin takes on this lifestyle challenge with gusto and in the course of documenting her month of hyper-local eating she brings to light our society’s dependency on mass-produced, prepackaged food. She also loses six pounds and reconnects her body to her physical environment and community, gaining a sense of well-being that she credits entirely to her month of “relational” eating as she refers to it in this TEDxTalk.
With practical tips on adopting your own locally sourced diet, BLESSING THE HANDS THAT FEED US is a candid, humorous, and inspirational guide to the locavore movement and a healthy food future.
Vicki Robin is a renowned innovator, writer, and speaker. In addition to coauthoring the bestselling Your Money or Your Life, Robin has been at the forefront of the sustainable living movement. She lives on Whidbey Island in Washington.
